UMass Dartmouth is now giving those with a passion for the art of fashion the chance to channel that passion into a career. The university has just launched a new program with just this in mind: the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Fashion Design & Production.
Students in this new program can channel their creativity while developing a wide range of skills and knowledge. Among other things, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of advanced fashion design theories such as modern fashion trends, public speaking and presentation, the business side of the fashion industry, technical design and production and computer-aided design (CAD).
Students have up-to-date software and fashion-forward techniques at their disposal, helping them to build a strong and comprehensive portfolio of work. The program coursework features concentrated areas of specialization while providing students the opportunity to diversify their studies and open more career doors. Some of the courses include:
- Consumer behavior
- Fashion illustration
- Design and production
- Computer-aided drafting (CAD) for fashion
- Couture draping
- Pattern drafting
- Apparel construction
To further boost graduates’ chances for success, UMass Dartmouth’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) provides students with invaluable internship and networking opportunities. This real-world experience helps aspiring fashion professionals make valuable industry connections in both the emerging fashion city of Boston and in New York – one of the top fashion capitals of the world.
When it comes to fashion design and production, there is no substitute for practical experience. UMass Dartmouth recognizes this, providing students with other opportunities for practical exposure including:
- The Annual CVPA Fashion Show: This yearly event offers students the opportunity to showcase their creativity through fashion. The show provides excellent practice for bigger stages and is a great platform for receiving constructive criticism from peers.
- Community Interaction: Students are able to attend numerous guest lectures and visit various fashion industry sites. They also have the opportunity to interact with industry professionals and peers, gaining valuable insight, advice, inspiration and more.
- State of the Art Facilities: The College of Visual and Performing Arts is home to the best of modern art-related technology, spacious student studios, and galleries. Students are able to exhibit their creations through the galleries located on the main UMass Dartmouth campus and at the Star Store campus in downtown New Bedford, giving them the confidence to progress to bigger stages.
The University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth, just 60 miles south of Boston, is conveniently located in one of the top 10 safest states in America, close to one of the world’s top 10 (arguably top 5) fashion capitals – New York.
